Verdict: Disappointing cash-in

Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney, indubitably a great pair of entertainers, both make their final screen appearances in Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb.

They make up one reason to see it, but I’m not sure I can quite stretch to two. The best I can offer is Dan Stevens, showing an unexpected flair for comedy as a fully codpieced Sir Lancelot looking for the Holy Grail and pining for ‘sweet, beauteous Guinevere’.

With his powerful performance as a psychopathic ex-marine in The Guest, and now a demonstration that he can play very ably for laughs, it might soon be Lady Mary alone who remembers him as insipid Matthew from Downton Abbey.

In becoming what film industry bean-counters like to call a franchise, the Night At The Museum pictures have rather exhausted what, the first time out, in 2006, was a fair-sized dollop of comic novelty and charm.

The second film three years later failed to recapture the engaging verve of the first, and this one is feebler still, with a plot that drives its characters rather than the other way round. In fact, it doesn’t so much drive them as drag them along for the ride.

Shawn Levy, who directed all three films, hasn’t quite run out of ideas, but he has certainly run out of originality.

Here, security guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller), now promoted to ‘Director of Night-time Operations’, heads for London with his collection of living exhibits — including, once again, Williams as President Theodore Roosevelt, Owen Wilson as a miniature cowboy and Steve Coogan as his camp Roman centurion friend.

The ancient Egyptian tablet which magically brings the characters to life has developed an unsightly green fungus, greeted by the cynics among us as a metaphor for the trilogy itself, but by Larry and his boss (Ricky Gervais) as a reason to visit the British Museum. Evidently that is the only place to restore the tablet’s sheen, and thus the magic.

This contrived transatlantic relocation at least has the benefit of introducing some new characters, such as Stevens in his clanking suit of medieval armour, and Ben Kingsley, eye-lined up to the nines as a proud pharaoh.

Not to mention rising star Rebel Wilson as a security guard not so much slow-witted as semi-lobotomised, who falls in love with Larry’s Neanderthal lookalike Laaa (also played by Stiller).

The new setting also yields some striking aerial shots of notable landmarks, such as The Shard, rising high over the City. These are accompanied by the Clash’s hit London Calling, and very possibly by the band’s late lead singer Joe Strummer turning in his grave.

The old punk rocker wasn’t thinking of quite such an icon of capitalism when he sang about London calling ‘to the underworld’.

Still, it’s nice to see the capital looking resplendent, and there’s an amusing scene on stage at the Palladium, where Lancelot crashes in on a performance of Camelot, in which King Arthur is played by Hugh Jackman, mispronounced by Lancelot as Huge Act-Man.

That made me laugh. It is good, too, to get a glimpse of those old troupers, Rooney and Dick Van Dyke, as former museum emp-loyees now living in a nursing home.

But on the whole this valedictory effort, like so many ‘franchise’ pictures, rarely looks like anything more than a bid to cash in on the popularity of the earlier films.

See if you can identify the two most significant words from the following couple of lines in the Twentieth Century Fox production notes, which tell us that the Night At The Museum franchise has ‘captivated audiences globally and grossed over one billion dollars. Now, its third instalment takes all of its beloved characters around the world for their greatest adventure yet.’

Beloved characters? Greatest adventure? Captivated audiences? Of course not. It’s ‘billion dollars’.

Dumb and Dumber To (15)

Verdict: Feeble-minded, and feeble to

At least it took the Farrelly brothers 20 years to attempt to cash in on the success of their 1994 hit Dumb And Dumber, although I spent most of Dumb And Dumber To wishing they hadn’t bothered.

Nobody ever went to see a Farrelly brothers film for the subtle wit and sophistication of its humour, but, even so, a set-piece with a colostomy bag inside the first 75 seconds sets the bar very low indeed.

Reprising their original roles as amiable morons Harry and Lloyd, Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey appear to enjoy themselves, the latter in particular deploying his undoubted talent for gurning slapstick.

The story, such as it is, has the dimwits going in search of the young woman they assume to be Harry’s grown-up daughter, Penny, long since adopted by a brilliant inventor and his wife, because Penny might provide the kidney he needs for a transplant.

But the quest leads them headlong into the orbit of a couple of murderous gold-diggers, setting up a crime caper not unlike the one in the first film, although what seemed innovative in 1994 looks tired and more than a little desperate here.

That isn’t to say there aren’t a few pleasures, such as the presence, as Penny’s biological mother, of Kathleen Turner, seemingly more than happy to poke fun at her own somewhat matronly looks.

I’m all for Hollywood stars letting the ageing process take its natural course, but very few do so quite so gamely.

Three cheers for the siren of Body Heat for positively wallowing in dialogue about her weight, including a line about her having ‘blowfish jowls’.

Otherwise, the thorough stupidity of the characters yields a few genuine giggles. Penny, also intellectually challenged, declares that she wants to go to India to do voluntary work in a leprechaun colony.

But a handful of giggles simply isn’t sufficient reward for sitting through so much relentless, and, more to the point, unfunny, tastelessness, in which no topic is deemed unsuitable for comedy. Not even — heaven help us — teenage menstruation.

I don’t know whether the Farrellys named their idiots Harry and Lloyd as some kind of tribute to the great silent-era comedian Harold Lloyd, but actually I was reminded of another pair of silent-film icons during Dumb And Dumber To.

The history of blockhead double-acts in the movies now extends from Laurel and Hardy to Carrey and Daniels. That doesn’t represent progress.
